  • - The new car market falls 1.6% in August, a typically quiet month for car sales
  • - Zero-emission vehicles take a record 3.4% market share as hybrids also register growth
  • - Compared to the same time August last year, fully electric vehicles registered soars by 377%

There has been a slight slump in overall car registrations for the month of August, according to figures released by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT). This can be attributed to falling demand for diesel and plug-in hybrid vehicles.

Diesel registrations have been in freefall and have continued it’s 29-month in a row decline. Petrol has remained stable with a 1% increase but the real news is the fact that zero-emission cars show the biggest percentage growth, up 377.5% which translates an extra 3,147 electric vehicles registered on UK roads August 19’ in comparison to August 18’. Hybrid electric cars also noted an increase on the roads of 36.2% in comparison to the same time last year which translates to an extra 4,014 hybrids on the roads.

There is a welcome, diverse range of vehicles available to the British driver in 2019. These different vehicles and technologies provide an option to fine-tune your transport to accommodate lifestyle and driving needs. We are in an age of the cleanest-ever petrol and diesel available and alternatively fuelled vehicles such as 27 hybrids and plug-in hybrids and 2 zero-emission battery-electric and hydrogen vehicles.

We can also expect that the range covered by vehicles to increase due to new powertrain technologies, a common concern for prospective buyers of EV. Due to massive manufacturer investment, we can expect the range capable to almost double over the coming year.

The two factors that are still at the forefront of the minds of consumers, still to be addressed are; cost and charging infrastructure.

Still a burgeoning industry, the Electric Vehicle market is certainly making tracks but are they ambitious enough to reach the optimistic government targets?
